End of August, huh? As always, sure snuck up on me. And although it is disgustingly hot here in Texas, I’ve definitely been getting those back to school vibes from folks.
Many of you may be sending little ones to school or child care for the first time, and many are going back after the lawlessness of a pandemic summer. So here are some tips to make things go smoothly, especially for those toddlers!
Expect tears during drop off and pick up. I wouldn’t want to leave the comfort of home or my parents either! Most kiddos have difficulty with these times of day anywhere from 1 week to 1 month. Keep it consistent, keep it short, and know they probably stopped crying as soon as you left. And for those of you who’s kiddo had no problem at all, you can go sit with the easy sleepers this round.
Talk about the routine. Who’s dropping off, who’s picking up, what are you doing afterwards. What’s the teacher’s name, will there be familiar faces. All of these are good things to go over before starting, or while you are still adjusting. Bonus tip- these are good questions to ask if you want to know what’s happening at school. Pair with those pictures you get sent, and they’re sure to tell you something about their day.
Remind them that mommies and daddies (and aunts or grandpas or whoever) always come back. Remind them how much you love them, even when they’re at school.
Keep it consistent. Yes, the golden rule of tips. Try to keep as much about the school process the same. If they have a new teacher, try to keep the back pack and lunch box the same. New friends? Remind them about the old ones that are still there. Have the same person do drop off, and the same do pick up as much as possible. You get the idea!
Here’s hoping that everyone’s start of the school year (or just the beginning of September!) goes smoothly. And send me those first day pics!
