Let’s dive right into it! I’m going to talk about one of the most important parts of potty training… readiness signs.
Often, as parents, we want to potty train when it is most convenient for us, or by a certain age we’ve heard it needs to be done by. Maybe you know there’s a big transition coming up so you want it to be done beforehand. Maybe your little is starting school and there’s a potty training requirement. Maybe they’re turning three soon and you’re just sick of diapers. You can absolutely start potty training whenever you want but… if the readiness signs aren’t there it’s going to take longer. And potty training regressions suck.
So what are some common signs? Here you go:
Letting you know when diaper is wet or dirty so they can be changed
Pooping in privacy
Being able to pull pants up and down independently
Showing interest in you going to the bathroom
Letting you know before they have to go
Being able to sit and stand from some sort of toilet independently
Having a dry diaper after a few hours or waking up dry
Now I know those are a lot. Your little doesn’t have to be doing it all! And there’s a lot of other factors that go into it (gender, age, temperament, sensory preferences, development, etc). But if your kiddo is not doing any of those things, please save yourself the trouble and delay!
If you feel like you NEED to start, and your little is still not displaying signs of readiness, try making it a part of the routine. Don’t take the diaper off yet, but sit them on a toilet when they wake up, before eating, before leaving anywhere, after eating, before and after nap…. You get the idea. Show them that it’s something we do, without the pressure of having to let you know.
If they are showing the above signs, it’s tiiiiiime. Up to you what method you choose, but your kiddo is ready and will probably catch on quickly. Personally, I’m a fan of the stay home naked for three days approach. Quick and dirty. Literally.
